My mum, Wendy, and I set off on our first river cruise with Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours that would take us through the heart of Europe - winding along the majestic Danube from Budapest to Munich.

It was a trip mum had on her bucket list and had always wanted to do, and after hearing so many wonderful things about Scenic's service and attention to detail, we knew we'd made the right choice.

Seven cities, four countries and countless memories later, I can honestly say it was one of the most special experiences we've ever shared. Scenic truly delivered on everything we'd hoped for - from the lovely ship, Amber, to the excellent organisation that meant we could just relax and enjoy our time together.

Budapest

Our journey started in Budapest, a city that felt equal parts regal and romantic. Cruising past the illuminated Parliament building at night was absolutely breathtaking - the golden lights reflecting on the water created pure magic.

We wandered the cobbled streets of Buda Castle, soaked up the grandeur of St Stephen's Basilica and found ourselves constantly stopping to take photos. Budapest has this incredible way of making you feel like you've stepped into a fairy tale.

Bratislava

Bratislava was a surprise gem. Less crowded than its neighbouring capitals, it had a charm all its own. We strolled through the Old Town, admired the quirky statues (particularly the man emerging from a manhole cover!) and took in views from the castle overlooking the Danube.

There's something lovely about discovering a place that exceeds your expectations - Bratislava definitely did that for us.

Vienna

Stepping into Vienna was like entering a world of pure elegance. Mum and I were both captivated by the baroque architecture at every turn. We toured Schönbrunn Palace and marvelled at the opulence, then enjoyed an unforgettable concert at the Palaias Liechtenstein.

The combination of imperial history and musical heritage made Vienna feel truly magical. It was the kind of place where you understand why it inspired so many great composers.

Dürnstein & the Wachau Valley

The cruise through the Wachau Valley delivered some of the most beautiful scenery of the entire trip - rolling vineyards, gentle hills and charming villages around every bend. In Dürnstein, we visited the ruins where Richard the Lionheart was once imprisoned and wandered among the pretty blue and white buildings.

It was peaceful and picturesque - exactly what we'd hoped a river cruise would be. The pace was perfect for really taking in the landscape and spending quality time together.

Brandstatt & Passau

Our stop in Brandstatt was more relaxed - perfect for taking in the slower rhythm of small-town Austria and enjoying some local coffee and cake. Then came Passau, with its winding alleys and riverside charm. Known as the 'City of Three Rivers', it was the kind of place you could wander for hours, discovering hidden courtyards and charming shops.

We visited St Stephen's Cathedral with its impressive baroque interior - a beautiful way to reflect on our journey as we prepared for our final destination, Munich.

Looking back, this wasn't just a holiday - it was quality time with mum that we'll treasure forever. The river cruise format was perfect for us: comfortable, stress-free, and with just the right balance of sightseeing and relaxation.

BIG thanks to Ruth for making my mum's dream a reality and for understanding exactly what would make this trip special for both of us.
