When we decided to explore Norway, I knew we were in for dramatic landscapes - but nothing quite prepares you for the reality of those crystal-clear fjords reflecting the mountains like mirrors.
Our week-long adventure took us from Oslo through to the stunning fjord region of Balestrand, finishing in the charming harbour city of Bergen. It was ambitious, full-on, and gave us a real taste of what makes Norway special.
Our journey through the fjords
The real stars of our trip were the train journeys. Norway's rail routes are legendary, and for good reason. The beautiful train rides with magnificent scenery were honestly the most exciting part of the whole trip. Winding through valleys, alongside fjords and up into the mountains, these weren't just transfers between destinations - they were experiences in themselves.

After arriving at Oslo and taking the Airport Express Train into the city, we spent a couple of nights at the Thon Hotel Terminus before the real adventure began. The journey from Oslo to Balestrand was long - an early start, two train rides including the famous Flåmsbana railway from Myrdal down to Flåm, then a catamaran transfer to Balestrand. All the transfers between destinations were easy and smooth, even if it was quite a full day.
The catamaran journey from Sogndal to Bergen offered more of that stunning fjord scenery. We didn't manage to get window seats inside, but we spent time on deck taking in the views as we glided across the water.
Glacier adventures

One of our highlights was the Fjord & Glacier Tour from Balestrand to Fjærland - something I found extremely interesting. Our guide was excellent, explaining the formation, movement and significance of these ancient ice formations.
We travelled up the narrow Fjærlandsfjord with its light green glacial melt water, visited the Norwegian Glacier Museum, and then headed up to Bøyabreen glacier itself - a branch of the massive Jostedalsbreen. It brought the landscape to life in a completely different way.
Where we stayed
The Thon Hotel Bristol Bergen
The Thon Hotel Bristol Bergen turned out to be our favourite. For a three-star hotel, it punched well above its weight - well-equipped rooms with coffee machine, free pods and milk, fridge, safe, even towelling robes and slippers. The business room we were in was large and clean, and the breakfasts were nice. The location in the heart of Bergen was brilliant, with most attractions within walking distance.
The Kviknes Hotel, Balestrand
The Kviknes Hotel in Balestrand had beautiful common areas, lovely grounds, and the food was very good. Set right on the fjord, the views and setting were stunning.
The Thon in Oslo
The Thon in Oslo was similar to Bergen, though the location wasn't quite as good. Service in all three hotels was good throughout.
The reality of Norway
I'll be honest - Norway is expensive.
And as vegetarians, we found restaurant menus quite meat-heavy, but the fish restaurants, while pricey, served some amazing dishes that made it worthwhile.
The people? Friendly and helpful throughout.
What we'll remember
What will I remember most? The beautiful fjords - so pristine and clear you could see every detail reflected perfectly in the water.
We saw lovely sunsets, hit an unexpected heatwave, and had that constant sense of being surrounded by pristine, dramatic nature.
Would we return? Absolutely. I'd definitely want to return and explore the rest of this beautiful country. A week gave us a taste, but there's so much more of Norway to discover.
And would I tackle it without Ruth's help? I would not have managed it without her. The service was very good, and having someone who knows Norway on the ground there, as well as back in the UK, gave us real peace of mind. Having advice and help with the bookings made all the difference - especially in a country where planning can be complex and expensive. Everything worked well.
Norway delivered on its promise of dramatic beauty. Our trip was full-on, packed with experiences and left us wanting more. That's the mark of a really good holiday.
